چکیده

We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Although a stellar nuclear bar structure is clearly identified in the near-infrared images in the central 10 " , inside the ring identified as the ILR of the primary bar, there is no nuclear bar structure in the molecular gas. Instead, the CO emission reveals an elongated structure, 15 " in length, beginning at the nucleus (defined by the radio center) aligned with the jet/ionisation cone, at a PA of 127 degrees. This morphology, not frequently observed in Seyfert galaxies, may be interpreted in terms of enhanced CO excitation along the walls of the cone. Kinematical perturbations along the cone support this scenario. At larger-scale, CO emission is tracing the primary bar, and outer ring structure. The total molecular mass, estimated from the CO emission, is M(H2) = 3.1 10 9 M⊙.

Molecular Gas in Candidate Double Barred Galaxies III. A Lack of Molecular Gas?

Most models of double-barred galaxies suggest that a molecular gas component is crucial for maintaining long-lived nuclear bars. We have undertaken a CO survey in an attempt to determine the gas content of these systems and to locate double barred galaxies with strong CO emission that could be candidates for high resolution mapping. We observed ten galaxies in CO J=2−1 and J=3−2 and did not det...

Starbursts in barred spiral galaxies VI . HI observations and the K - band Tully - Fisher relation ⋆

This paper is primarily a study of the effect of a bar on the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of starburst and Seyfert galaxies. We also make comparisons with a sample of " normal " galaxies and investigate how well starburst and Seyfert galaxies follow the fundamental scaling Tully-Fisher (TF) relation defined for normal galaxies. 111 Markarian (Mrk) IRAS galaxies were observed at the Nançay rad...

Molecular Gas in Candidate Double-Barred Galaxies II. Cooler, Less Dense Gas Associated with Stronger Central Concentrations

We have performed a multi-transition CO study of the centers of seven doublebarred galaxies that exhibit a variety of molecular gas morphologies to determine if the molecular gas properties are correlated with the nuclear morphology and star forming activity. Near infrared galaxy surveys have revealed the existence of nuclear stellar bars in a large number of barred or lenticular galaxies. High...

Molecular Gas around the Double Nucleus in M 83

The center of M83, a barred starburst galaxy with a double nucleus, has been observed in the CO(J=2–1) and CO(J=3–2) lines with the Submillimeter Array. The molecular gas shows a distribution and kinematics typical for barred galaxies at ∼kpc radii, but reveals unusual kinematics around the double nucleus in the central ∼300 pc. Our CO velocity data show that the visible nucleus in M83 is at le...

The effect of bars on the obscuration of active nuclei

We present evidence for a strong correlation between the gaseous absorbing column density towards type 2 Seyfert nuclei and the presence of a stellar bar in their host galaxies. Strongly barred Seyfert 2 galaxies have an average NH that is two orders of magnitude higher than non-barred Seyfert 2s. More than 80% of Compton thick (NH > 1024cm−2) Seyfert 2s are barred. This result indicates that s...
